This is Britain’s first ever Muslim heritage trail. It incorporates three key sites in the county of Surrey; the country’s first purpose-built mosque, the Shah Jahan, the very first burial site dedicated to Muslim soldiers, the Peace Garden and Britain’s first Muslim cemetery at Brookwood Cemetery. The trail also has a cemetery walk that identifies some of Brookwood’s most famous Muslim burials including the great Qur’an translator Marmaduke Pickthall and one of Britain’s first Muslim peers, Lord Headley.
Parking
Whilst there is on-site parking at the Shah Jahan Mosque and The Peace Gardens, Brookwood Cemetery is a very large cemetery and the historic Muslim burial sites are quite some distance from the cemetery’s main car park and office.
We therefore suggest the following: If arriving by car or small minibuses, try to park in the bays along Pine Avenue close to the entrance for the Brookwood train Station. For groups arriving in coaches, it is best to use the Brookwood train station car park and then walk through to the cemetery via the connecting footpath. From here it is a 5 minute walk west along Pine Avenue to Britain’s first Muslim cemetery and the start of Britain’s Muslim Heritage Trail #2: The Muslim Cemetery Walk.
